In 2013, Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emmanuel made the unprecedented decision to close over 50 of the city’s public schools, negatively affecting more than 30,000 students, largely from Chicago’s Black and Brown communities. In response, students, parents, teachers, activists, and general community members organized a mass protest to show their collective displeasure with the decision and the impact it had on so many lives.
